Day 11: In the Stillness

Be still, and know that I am God! I am exalted among the nations; I am exalted in the earth.” The Lord of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge. Selah
Psalm 46:10-11

I could see my wife’s lips moving, and I could even hear sound coming from her, but I was NOT understanding anything she was saying, even though she was only 15 feet away from me in our house.

That was because I was currently holding the baby, my 4-year-old was shouting next to me, and the TV was playing music right next to my head.

I was doing my best to hear my wife, but there was too much noise. I needed to clear away the distractions and make space to actually hear her.

Fasting is more than just giving something up for the sake of cutting back. It’s about creating space to listen.

God’s voice is often described as a gentle whisper, not a shout. In the busyness of life, it’s easy to miss what He’s saying, because we have so many other “noisy” things around us: work, shopping, family, stress, desires, schedules, etc.

This 21 days of fasting isn’t just to help us build discipline or cut back on sugar (though those can both be good outcomes). This fast is an invitation to lean into the quiet, to become more aware of God’s presence, and to recognize the ways He is already speaking to you.

Let the quietness of this moment remind you that God longs to meet with you. The more you tune out the noise, the clearer His voice becomes.

Reflection Questions:

Take a moment in the stillness of your fast today to reflect on these questions:

  1. What am I learning about God’s voice through this time of fasting?
  2. How can I tune out more distractions to hear Him better?

Ideas for Action:

  1. Find Stillness: Set aside five minutes today to sit in complete silence. Use this time to quiet your mind and simply listen.
  2. Journal Your Thoughts: Write down what you feel God is revealing to you about His voice and any distractions you feel led to surrender.

Prayer

Lord, thank You for speaking to me. Help me to quiet the distractions in my life so I can hear Your voice more clearly. Teach me to recognize Your whispers and respond with faith and obedience. Amen.
