Day 8: Whole Heart

Yet even now, says the Lord, return to me with all your heart,  with fasting, with weeping, and with mourning; rend your hearts and not your clothing. Return to the Lord your God, for he is gracious and merciful,  slow to anger, abounding in steadfast love.
Joel 2:12-13

Have you ever watched an info-mercial? There was a time right after college, when I had a bad habit of staying up way too late. I would have the TV on in the background while I worked on something else.

At a certain point of the night, the info-mercials would start. Some enthusiastic salesperson would be talking about all the features and benefits of the latest gadget to purchase. (Now it comes in BLUE!)

But I heard a marketing professional say once that “people don’t buy a drill because it has extra accessories or because it has a bigger battery. They buy a drill because they want a hole in their wall.”

The drill is just a tool to get a hole. But too many people focus on the tool.

Fasting, like all spiritual habits, is just a tool. And it’s designed to allow God to create change in us.

But when we approach our fasting as something we are doing “for God,” or when we focus on how we’re fasting, or how long, or from what… we’re focusing on the tool instead of the end-result.

The prophet Joel reminds us that fasting is a tool that allows us to respond to God’s invitation to return to him fully. Because God doesn’t just want a piece of our hearts… He wants all of it.

The practice of fasting helps us let go of the things that have taken His place in our lives, creating room for Him to work.

Are there areas in your life where you’ve drifted, become distracted, or held back? Even now, God is calling you to come closer, no matter where you’ve been or what’s been pulling you away. His arms are open, ready to receive you.

Reflection Questions:

  1. What distractions or habits have made it harder for you to experience closeness with God?
  2. How can fasting help you intentionally release those things and return to God with your whole heart?

Ideas for Action:

  1. Identify a Distraction: Take five minutes to reflect on one thing that has consistently pulled you away from God. Write it down, and ask God for the strength to let it go during this fast.
  2. Set Aside Time to Reflect: Choose 10–15 minutes today to sit quietly with God. During this time, tell Him you want to return to Him and listen for His guidance.

Prayer

Father, I hear Your call to return to You with all my heart. Thank You for Your endless grace and patience with me. Help me let go of the distractions that have pulled me away and draw near to You in a deeper way. Amen.
